History
In 1940, with the war raging in Europe, the US was desperately re-arming. The best fighters available to the US Army Air Corps (USAAC, later changed to US Army Air Force, USAAF) at that time were the Bell P-39 and the Curtiss P-40.
The first model of the Curtiss fighter was simply called the P-40. The next models were the P-40B and P-40C which included modifications based upon British combat experience with the Tomahawk (Tomahawk I, Tomahawk IIa and Tomahawk IIb being the British designations for the P-40, P-40Band P-40C, respectively).
One of the many units to work up on the P-40 at this time was the 31st Pursuit Group, based at Selfridge Field, Michigan.
The 31st Fighter Group would later see action flying the Spitfire from England with the 8th Air Force (AF), over North Africa and Italy with the 12th AF and, finally, bomber escort missions flying Mustangs with the 15th AF over Italy and southern Germany.
